4th of July

Today we celebrate the US Declaration of Independence. The US has been an experiment in liberal democracy. In many respects, the experiment has been successful as the average person today living in the US has more rights than enjoyed by most people throughout recorded history.

Those rights, however, are at risk, especially the rights of free speech and due process. Without those basic rights, which are inscribed in the US Bill of Rights, we have no democracy and liberalism lapses into fascism, the dark "alter" of democracy.

So, today I celebrate foundational rights and urge all Americans to be vigilant in monitoring our leaders, whose whims and special interests are the real threat to democracy.
