Japanese Geneticists on Radiation

I was searching for information using JSTOR, a historical index, and found this very interesting article:
Japanese Geneticists on Radiation (1957). Science, New Series, Vol. 126, No. 3263 (Jul. 12, 1957), pp. 68-69. Stable URL: http://www.jstor.org/stable/1753454 Accessed: 27-11-2017 15:24 UTC "From what has been pointed out above, we are led to conclude that any amount of radiation, however small it may be, is deleterious to the heredity of man. Although a certain dose has been set as 'permissible' for people engaged in the operation of X-rays and radioactive apparatus or substances, this is only aimed at the safety and health of those people themselves. However, as far as the genetic effect on their descendants is concerned, there is no theoretical limit below which danger may be entirely excluded."

This argument that radiation produces irreparable errors in the DNA of eggs and sperm has not been contradicted, as this more recent study affirms:
Jacquet, P. (2004 Apr-Jun). Sensitivity of germ cells and embryos to ionizing radiation. Journal of Biological Regulators and Homeostatic Agents, 18(2): 106-114.
Abstract: Experiments performed in laboratory animals suggest that ionizing radiation can induce DNA damage in the germ cells of exposed individuals and lead to various deleterious effects in their progeny, including miscarriage, low birth weight, congenital abnormalities and perhaps cancer. However, no clear evidence for such effects has been found in epidemiological studies of people exposed to radiation. The predicted risks of hereditary effects of any kinds resulting from parental exposure to relatively low doses of ionizing radiation remain very low, compared to the spontaneous risks in the absence of irradiation. Irradiation of the mouse embryo can lead to various effects (lethality, growth retardation, congenital abnormalities), depending on the period of gestation at which irradiation occurs. In humans, prenatal irradiation has only been exceptionally associated with congenital abnormalities, but irradiation between weeks 8-25 has been shown to be able to induce severe mental retardation. Although being not proven, the risk of developing a childhood cancer following prenatal irradiation may also not be excluded. Like for genetic effects, the risk of adverse effects following exposure of the embryo to relatively low doses remains quite low compared to the natural risks.
Of course, the question of how much radiation is too much radiation remains contested and is, of course, subject to so many contingencies that a singular level will never be achieved.

Here are some of my thoughts on the potential relationship between autism and ionizing radiation that posits exposure as producing micro-deletions, as well as epigenetic changes, that may cause the mosaic of symptoms associated with the disorder, as well as other multi-factorial disorders, including diabetes:

majiasblog.blogspot.com/2011/05/could-ionizing-radiation-play-role-in.htmlAfter studying the effects of low-levels of ionizing radiation, I began to suspect a link to autism. I have found a possible mechanism. NK CD 56 cells are very radiosensitive and they have also been implicated as dysfunctional in children with autism. Maybe there is a connection here? Below are the steps I used in making this ...

Amid widespread charges that his administration is plagued by conflicts of interest, President Donald Trump is attempting to install a new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau chief linked to a lobbyist for a bank currently facing the prospect of major CFPB sanctions, according to an International Business Times review of federal records. The CFPB is also right now responsible for enforcing a separate set of sanctions against the same bank.

Trump is trying to install former lawmaker and White House budget director Mick Mulvaney to head the CFPB, after the resignation of its former chief, Obama appointee Richard Cordray. Federal records show Mulvaney’s longtime staffer is Natalee Binkholder, who left Mulvaney’s office to work as a top lobbyist for Santander - a major bank.

The records show Binkholder worked for Mulvaney from 2011 to 2017, ultimately serving as his chief of staff in the U.S. House.Federal records show that in representing Santander in 2017, Binkholder has lobbied on a congressional bill to kill a CFPB rule designed to prevent financial firms from forcing customers to waive their rights to join class action lawsuits.

So much for suing nuclear bastards

Are We the Most Evil Country in the World?

    By David Macaray
Take a moment and think about that. If we’re not the “most evil” country in the world — i.e., the country with the greatest number of evil people in it — then we Americans are doing something terribly wrong, because we have the greatest number of people incarcerated in our prisons.

If these people deserve to be locked up, then so be it. If they deserve it, then yes, one can make the case that America is home to the most rotten people in the world. While that label is not something to be proud of, we’re stuck with it. But if these people don’t deserve to be imprisoned, then shame on us, because all we’re doing is messing with them.

Are we honestly afraid of all these people? Are we afraid of them or are we just mad at them? Is it retribution or punishment? Or is it a whole other deal, one having more to do with economics than “justice”? Are we running these people through the system in order to provide jobs for judges, police, bailiffs, counselors, court recorders, lawyers, probation officers, prison guards and bail bondsmen?

Another element is the rise of private (“for-profit”) prisons, one of the more hideous features of that now ubiquitous phenomenon known as “outsourcing.” Under this arrangement, when local, state or federal authorities can’t (or choose not to) handle the influx of prisoners, they turn over all or part of the operation to private firms.

Even if we give these for-profit prisons the benefit of the doubt and willingly say they do a better job than government-run prisons (an assertion that has been repeatedly challenged), there’s a disturbing component of self-interest involved here. In fact, it’s not only disturbing, it’s downright frightening.

In order to survive, these private facilities require a constant supply of prisoners. They need prisoners the same way sausage-makers need pigs. Indeed, just as a severe pig epidemic would ravage the sausage industry, a precipitous and sustained drop in the crime rate would ravage the for-profit prison industry.

Bizarre as it sounds, what we now have in the U.S. is a thriving industry that goes home at night and prays for more crime. It’s true. Unlike the average citizen who clings to the belief that our society is gradually improving itself, these for-profit prisons (and the shareholders who invest in them) hope that our families and schools and churches will produce more criminals.

Ironically, violent crime (which the FBI classifies as murder, rape, and aggravated assault) has decreased dramatically over the last 15-20 years. For whatever reason (and there are numerous theories), we have become a demonstrably less violent society. Annual homicides now number roughly 16,000. By contrast, there are roughly 32,000 suicides per year.

    drug laws.

Putting people in prison for drug use has always been strange. Yes, drugs are illegal, and yes, they can’t be ignored; but insisting that some poor schmuck be locked inside a cage because he wanted to get high seems harsh. And referring to these sorry-assed stoners as “criminals” isn’t fair. We should call them what they are: “sausage.”

  5. Proud American workers, the top10%, and evangelicals voted for Donald Trump, so that he could help out the working class, cut taxes for the 1%, and make america godly. Help out the working class by removing financial protections, healthcare, and all those regulations which prevent honest billionaires from killing people, for profit. You can get sick from all the radioactive crap and chemicals in the environment, and die in the street from no medical care. But hey, its going for a good cause, so Trump can further inundate America with Radioactive waste and start world war 3. Maybe he can even go wipe out another few million people, in countries weaker than America.
One day you too can live in your car and work. Live in a concentration camp and provide slave labor. Die in the the streets from bankruptcy over your medical bills. All you have to do is give Trump, the crooked politicians, the oligarchs, more rope to hang you, right now!

    America the Greatest!!
