WSJ: "Mexico Oil Watchdog Sounds Alarm"

The Wall Street Journal Feb 15 p. A10.

The article explains that Mexico's oil regulator is expressing concern over Pemex's plan to dig two ultra-deep (6000 feet) oil wells in the Gulf of Mexico near US waters.

The regulator claims Mexico has little experience drilling such deep wells and has no infrastructure in place for a disastrous blow-out like occurred with the Deepwater Horizon.

Majia here: Given the level of corruption that exists today I wonder whether the oil regulator is simply trying to make it easy for US contractors like Transocean and Haliburton to shoulder in on the deal.

Whatever the circumstances, it is clear that another major disaster in the Gulf is imminent as oil companies take massive risks to exploit a depleted resource that has effectively polluted much of the planet.

Greed and shortsightedness are the human way.

    February 15, 2012

    Dear Friends,

Today, NIRS and 37 other organizations submitted a formal Petition for Rulemaking to the NRC to expand emergency evacuation zones around U.S. nuclear reactors and make other improvements in emergency preparedness. We're calling this the Nuclear 911 campaign.
