Fukushima Daiichi Still Looks BAD; TEPCO Reports Contaminated Water Leak

Ever since the latest 6.0 earthquake (see The Mainichi for Account), Fukushima Daiichi has not looked very good, especially around reactors 2 and 3:

I don't know how the last earthquake increased emissions.

TEPCO is reporting a contaminated water leak. I have a theory that TEPCO reports miscellaneous, trivial events in a substitution policy deployed after significant plant setbacks. I speculate that rather than reporting the "true" bad news, TEPCO fabricates a palatable story instead.

Accordingly, the Asahi Shimbun states contaminated water "may have leaked" at Fukushima, although TEPCO insists samples show "no abnormal increase" in radioactivity.

Contaminated water might have leaked from the damaged Fukushima nuclear reactors after erroneous settings on water gauges lowered the levels of groundwater nearby.

The plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co., said Friday the settings on six of the dozens of wells around the reactors were 70 centimeters below the requirement. Groundwater at one well briefly sank below the contaminated water inside in May, possibly causing the radioactive water to leak into the soil.

TEPCO is investigating, but says samples have shown no abnormal increase in radioactivity and leaks to the outside are unlikely.
What is "an abnormal increase in radioactivity" at Daiichi when there are areas of the plant - such as the leaning vent stack - that measure in the sieverts and are capable of killing you within hours, if not minutes?

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Dec. 6 it detected the highest estimated radiation level for an outdoor location at the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant. The reading of 25 sieverts per hour was taken on steel piping near an exhaust stack for the No. 1 and No. 2 reactors, TEPCO said. The utility earlier said high radiation levels of at least 10 sieverts per hour were found on the piping....

  1. Here is the latest news on the contaminated water leak:

Weez: I sure hope you are not correct on the "flesh eating" bacteria. I have seen some strange medical stuff - including the elevated autism rates for kindergartners entering CA schools last year - and worried. I hope our worries are unjustified. I hope.
