Fukushima Daiichi Unit 2 and Other News

 Acceding to a request from Washington, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize around autumn for engaging with North Korea, Japanese government sources said Feb. 16. According to the sources, the U.S. government "informally" asked Tokyo to nominate Trump after he met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore in June, the first-ever summit between the two countries.


Meanwhile, Fukushima Daiichi unit 2 is looking very steamy. TEPCO announced they are trying to sample melted corium at that unit, which may explain the increased emissions at that unit:

Tokyo Electric Power Co., the operator of the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant, made the first physical contact on Feb. 13 with melted nuclear debris at the bottom of the plant's No. 2 reactor. A rod-like probe, inserted into the reactor, reportedly picked up lumps of debris the size of small stones.... Images have been released of the reddish-brown amorphous mass. But its level of radioactivity is still unknown...."
