The last two days I have seen (presumably) boat lights in Fukushima's harbor.
One would imagine seeing lights in the harbor would be a routine occurrence, but has been for me an unusual experience.
You can see two lights (red and green) in the background of units 1 and 2 in this screenshot from Cam 1:
Today the lights are red and green but yesterday they were white:
My guess is that some work is being conducted in the harbor. Years ago the media reported that hot nuclear debris were bulldozed into the harbor immediately after the disaster.
There has never been any authentication of this report, but over time I've seen some strange light from the harbor.

Meanwhile, Japan re-started 5 nuclear reactors in 2018 here.
The US has not yet closed California's Diablo Canyon Nuclear plant, sitting on a quake next to the Pacific Ocean almost at sea level.
Imagine if Alaska's recent 7.0 earthquake had happened under Diablo Canyon....
San louis Obisbos and Santa Barbara are in Ventura county. They have a history of being effected by wilfires in that area. They were effected and nuked by the Santa-Susana-Woolsey fires recentlty.
ReplyDeleteIn 2011 I was naive enough to believe that there would be an international response to the events at Fukushima. I should have read more into the way the USS Ronald Reagan was dealt with. Denial. As it turned out Japan was America's equal in denying that there was much of a problem. Despite the alarming reports about radiaton moving across the Pacific and various consequences on the West Coast of North America it never went any where, and now articles about Fukushima are as rare as those about Chernobyl.

Evidently the Establishments believe we can live with Fukushima and need not worry. Perhaps only a few know the real truth in this matter--but I do not know who they are and possibly they wish to remain hidden.
To connect the passing of H.W. to war time heroism was someone's clever trick. On the whole it is not easy to see any reason to mourn his passing or that of McCain. Any way it is less about these "heroes" than a chance for America to feel good about itself. It's an ad for the USA. The lab stole the show in any case.
His real legacy was Desert Storm and the New World Order annoucement. Where Lenin, Stalin and Hitler had failed . . . George and his team of hidden workers would presumably succeed. Fukushima ought to have been a time to triumph by saving the world from the invisible enemy.

Richard Nixon planned on building a thousand GE type nuclear reactors, like the ones that failed at Fukushima. Three-mile island stopped this insane plan.

The United States has always been involved with exporting nuclear energy to other countries.
Gregory Jaczko, the head of the NRC, at the time of Fukushima, was very concerned about the safety of Reactors, in the United States, post-Fukushima. He is now an outspoken critic of nuclear energy.
He went so far as to resign at the NRC, and currently writes about the severe deficiencies of nuclear-reactor-safety, in the United States.

Because even academics seem to overlook the catastrophic past we have come to think of the last few hundred years as the way things are supposed to be. But now is one of those rare epochs with good climate and not too many earthquakes or volcanos.
But we have no reason to think it will stay that way; and talking about CO2 is whistling in the dark.

Now that’s she’s been banned from Twitter, Crokin is working overtime to get her batshit crazy narrative out. In the wake of George H.W. Bush‘s death, she posted a video on her YouTube channel where she attempted to tie the former president’s death into her past claims that Trump-orchestrated mass arrests and executions are underway.
Crokin is a proponent of the “QAnon” conspiracy theory, which claims that an anonymous high-ranking figure in the Trump administration is sending coded messages to 8Chan about a secret operation to take down a “satanic pedophile ring involving countless political, economic, and cultural leaders.”
According to Crokin, her claim will reveal itself when mass arrests of D.C. political figures start to take place, which will ultimately result in military tribunals and executions.
“There is a very good chance that the crimes against children will be exposed and the floodgates will break open,” Crokin said Sunday. “I don’t know for sure. I’m praying that will be the case, but whether it happens on [December] 5th or in a week or three weeks, it’s happening.”
Crokin said that it was “no coincidence” that Bush died.

During an outage at Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant,
[ records show that PI unit 1 was in RFO and was the only PI unit in outage. ]
the licensee replaced the mechanical shaft seal on the 11 Residual Heat Removal (RHR) pump.
During subsequent post maintenance testing, it was found that there was significant seal leakage on the pump.
An evaluation was completed on December 4, 2018, which determined that it was a substantial safety hazard.
The licensee has shipped back six seals to Framatome to be tested.
It was determined that the cause of the failure was improper O-ring installation by the manufacturer.
Discussions with Framatome indicate that only Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant is effected by this defect,
but investigations are still ongoing.

How bootlegged versions of the legendary comic books conscripted the little Gaul into the anti-nuclear movement

It was an audacious piece of bootlegging that began in Austria and then spread like wildfire across Europe. Someone in the Austrian anti-nuclear movement decided to recreate the much beloved Asterix character in an anti-nuclear tale. Through cut-and-paste, an all new Asterix book was born — Asterix und das Atomkraftwerk (Asterix and nuclear power). It was created to coincide with the ultimately successful campaign against the proposed Zwentendorf nuclear power plant in Austria.
For those of us who grew up in Europe, the Asterix books — about the little ancient Gaul and his stone-hauling sidekick, Obelix — were a childhood fixture. Full of whimsy and humor, they were written in French by Rene Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo. The plots largely centered around Asterix and his fellow villagers defending themselves against the Romans. But they also ventured forth, including to ancient Britain, where Asterix mocks the national obsession with drinking tea by calling it “eau chaude”.

By 1978, when the first bootlegged anti-nuclear Asterix book appeared, Goscinny had died, but Uderzo filed numerous lawsuits and was eventually able to block distribution. Before then, however, the cut-and-paste idea had taken off, and numerous books had appeared, with at least 20 versions in German as well as in French, Dutch and in several Spanish dialects including Basque.
Asterix and Nuclear Power replicated the anti-Roman theme, this time with Julius Caesar planning to build a nuclear power plant in the village of Gauls inhabited by Asterix and his friends.
As researched and documented by Professor Dirk Spennemann, of Charles Sturt University in Australia, the story narrative is as follows:
“The village, which operates as a collective, is declared a construction site which causes the inhabitants to plan resistance. Initial calls for physical responses ‘Wo Unrecht zu Recht wird, wird Widerstand zur Pflicht’ (where injustice becomes expressed as law, resistance becomes mandatory) are rejected as premature, but eventually became a necessity in the face of an attempt by Roman troops to clear the site. An attempt to settle the matter in a session of an administrative court deciding on the construction permit, rather than to resort to radical actions as advocated by some, fails due to biased judges—despite a passionate plea by the protagonist.
Obelix and the nuclear burden
The famous Obelix and his rock, this time carrying the nuclear burden.
“Subsequent acts of civil defiance, such as disrupting the surveying of the site, were interpreted by the authorities as acts of terrorism, leading to an escalation. When the Gaul community induces the workers at the construction site to strike, the authorities move to clear the village by force. The first attempt fails, leading to nationwide declarations of solidarity.
Oh too bad! A terrible waste facility in Idaho closes. Idaho washing have too much Nuclear waste foisted upon them.

Maija, you are myopically antinuclear. Wake up, the 60s have been over for a half century. In the meantime ASU keeps pumping out high quality nuclear engineers and r&d to benefit mankind. Explosion and fire at German Advanced Nuclear Fuels plant

Advanced Nuclear Fuels plant in Lingen (Lower Saxony). This plant, located
near the Emsland nuclear reactor in northwestern Germany, is owned by
Framatome. Nuclear fuel elements are manufactured and sent to several
countries, including France. As a spokesman for the plant later confirmed
to the media Norddeutscher Rundfunk, the fire broke out in the laboratory
of a manufacturing workshop , where the quality of the uranium is tested
before shipment. This laboratory is located in the nuclear part of the
facility. Although quickly controlled, the fire required the intervention
of 150 firefighters from the area. The staff was evacuated. Since then, the
plant has been idling.

What happened in Japan was tragic, and mostly preventable. Nobody ever thought about a sequence of an earthquake and then a tsunami to wipe out the cooling capability for the reactors and the fuel pools. Nobody thought about the plant being cut off electrically and physically, so energy couldn't be imported to the location.
Nobody thought the new MOX rods that were sitting in the Machinery pools of reactors 3 and 4 would both explode in a dirty bomb event and shower the region and the ocean with plutonium.
But all that did happen. I'm happy Fukushima didn't wipe out Japan. It's really too early to know what the long-term effects will be on the earth. What we do know is we nearly had a domino event in Japan that could have been so bad as to never be recoverable.
The nukes still exist for one reason. Governments need the weapons grade plutonium that is created during the reaction for bombs. Otherwise they are a burden on the world that we do not need.
