1. Soluble cesium
2. Cesium microparticles
These are distinguished by their concentration of radioactivity, as noted by one of the researchers involved in the study:
August 14, 2018, Goldschmidt Conference (2018). First reliable estimates of highly radioactive cesium-rich microparticles released by Fukushima disaster. PhysOrg. Available: https://phys.org/news/2018-08-reliable-highly-radioactive-cesium-rich-microparticles.html#jCpThe actual research study described by PhysOrg is available here:
Dr. Utsunomiya, "However, we realized that the cesium-rich microparticle has an extremely high radioactivity ~1011 Bq/g compared with the much lower radioactivity for cesium-sorbing clay particles, and this can be used to distinguish the two types. So we have established a novel procedure to quantify the cesium-rich microparticles by applying a quantitative autoradiography method"...
This work does not imply that there is any additional radiation which has been missed—the total amount of cesium released at Fukushima remains the same. However, the glassy particles have concentrated the radiation, which means that there is still much new work to be done to understand how this concentrated radiation might affect health"

Wonder what the so called Japanese Whale Researchers think it is...if they’re really doing all this “whale research” shouldn’t they know?

Oh I think they know, but thr Fukuyama State Secrecy Act keeps them from discussing it, not that they would.

This is so sad but never shocking. Japans govt doesn’t value the life of animals. Look at what continues to happen in Taji.

ReplyDeleteCesium rich Microparticles, would act similarly to radium containing asbestos. They could be inhailed, stuck in lung tissue, and cause long-term irradiadion of that localizided tisaue

Transport of nuclear wastes – environmental danger, and police-state style security
Posted by Christina MacPherson
The danger: Police state The nuclear industry has traveled a long, dark way from its claims in the 1950s that it would produce energy too cheap to meter, Keegan said.
With nuclear power plants being retired around the globe, the age of nuclear energy has become the age of nuclear waste, Keegan said. No solution has been found for the safe disposal or storage of the waste, which remains dangerous essentially for eternity.
As the LaSalle proposal suggests, the potential involvement of the military, the secrecy of the transportation routes and the absence of consultation with the public are signs of a police state taking shape, according to Keegan.
“We’ve become a police state in which the transportation of the lethal excrement of the nuclear industry — nuclear waste — is totally secret and takes place under military escort,” said Keegan.
One of the costs: Our civil liberties.
“The industry and the government say, Sorry, we can’t tell you the details,” said Keegan. “We’re protecting you by not telling you.

If American socialism were to come to be the case, would these problems disappear at least in America? Now we know the form socialism took in Italy (Fascism) and in Germany (Nazism). I have no idea if any kind of environmentalism existed in those nations at that time or were encouraged by their forms of government. In Russia it took the form of Communism, and the Soviet Union's record is far from good in the matter of nuclear waste. Would American socialism even produce the funds necessary to deal with these matters?
ReplyDeleteAccording to a recent article over half of young people favor socialism now. What does that portend? So far socialism does not have a very good track record although the trains did run on time in Italy and in Germany prosperity occurred for a time. In Russia life was never very good under Communism though in later years not so bad as under Stalin. Perhaps socialism in the wrong term? But I can not think of one to replace it.
8.2 deep earthquake in West Pacific just after the volcanic activity in Hawaii stopped; the last time Hawaii volcanic activity stopped we had the Fukushima earthquake. Likely more volcanic activity and a large shallow earthquake around the Ring of Fire.
ReplyDeleteNow a moderate size earthquake at Fukushima. May be more to follow.
DeleteThanks, that coulld be bad
ReplyDeletethe behavior of governments in the developed world that suffer radiological disasters. The disasters themselves are so difficult to clean up, and take decades to even begin the clean up, that money is allocated for extensive public relations efforts. These become tasks that CAN be completed and CAN be considered successful. They function both to advance the public image agenda of the governments, and also deliver a sense of agency when the overall tone of nuclear disaster remediation is one of lacking effective agency.
ReplyDeleteTowards that end, the Japanese government is planning to integrate Fukushima sites and perceptions into the upcoming Olympics media fest. The journey of the Olympic torch through every prefecture of Japan will begin in Fukushima, a symbolic rebirth intended to facilitate the repopulating of the local communities that were evacuated, many of which have had few returnees since the government has declared them "safe" and cut public funds to those forcibly evacuated.
