Daily Flaring of Natural Gas in Permian Equates to Exhaust Emitted by 2.7 Million Cars Daily

Perhaps you've read that although individuals are being exhorted to "save the planet," corporations are the biggest polluters:

Suzanne Goldenberg (2013, November 20) Just 90 companies caused two-thirds of man-made global warming emissions. The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2013/nov/20/90-companies-man-made-global-warming-emissions-climate-changeChevron, Exxon and BP among companies most responsible for climate change since dawn of industrial age, figures show

he climate crisis of the 21st century has been caused largely by just 90 companies, which between them produced nearly two-thirds of the greenhouse gas emissions generated since the dawning of the industrial age, new research suggests.
The companies range from investor-owned firms – household names such as Chevron, Exxon and BP – to state-owned and government-run firms.
The analysis, which was welcomed by the former vice-president Al Gore as a "crucial step forward" found that the vast majority of the firms were in the business of producing oil, gas or coal, found the analysis, which has been published in the journal Climatic Change.
This article from the Guardian is dated now but the findings still hold true, as illustrated in this rather shocking fact about flaring of natural gas in Texas:
Rebecca Elliott (2018, December 27). In Booming Oil Field, Natural Gas Can Be Free. The Wall Street Journal, https://www.wsj.com/articles/in-booming-oilfield-natural-gas-can-be-free-11545906601?mod=searchresults&page=1&pos=2

One option for Permian operators with too much gas is to light it on fire, a practice known as flaring. Flaring levels reached record highs in the Permian last quarter, when companies burned an average of 407 million cubic feet a day, according to analysis of public data compiled by Rystad Energy, an energy consulting firm.

That has serious environmental consequences. The resulting greenhouse-gas emissions are equivalent to the daily exhaust emitted by about 2.7 million cars, according to estimates from the World Bank and Environmental Protection Agency.
The exhaust from 2.7 million cars produced daily by producers flaring gas in Texas alone!

Insane.

  1. That is insane Majia. Most of the water in Texas is not really drinkable. The Permian basin is the worst. Good blog entry. I feel like west Texas is an industrial sacrifice zone . It is like so many other places in the western United States.

The sheer volume of hydrocarbon burning is an eye opener. The sun minimum garbage probably does not make any difference, even if it had an iota of validity.

They will say that 120 million years ago there was 1000ppm co2 when the sun was in a totally different phase..

The world and atmosphere are so polluted with man generated greenhouse gasses , other gasses, chemicals and radionuclides now its is effecting things.

The geochemistry of the the oceans and atmosphere has been changed dramatically by humans in the past 175 years. Look at Venus it happened quickly there without all the human pollution.

They will say and do anything, to keep the madness going. The arctic is melting way faster than the Antarctic for some reason. I lived there for 3 years. Been to the Antarctic. They will sit there and tell boldface lies straight to your face even if you have seen it.

  4. I used to frequent texassharon.blogspot.com where fracking stories about West Texas were standard fare. Directional drilling and increasing fragmentation of bedrock are scary. I recall one place I lived where a separator was needed to control gas percolating out of the water caused it to spurt otherwise. And that was just from seismic. It is popular to blame industry for all the world's woes - and they are jerks. But there is not one data report from the future to tell us that the world has suffered terminal warming from the burning of fossil fuels and consequent release of CO2 in the air. A casual look at the proposition of fractional changes in the amounts of a trace gas on a globe where magma and water hold such a reservoir of energy should lead one to scratch one's head over the idea it controls much of anything. Twice almost nada is still insignificant - and I don't need an extraction industry to tell me that. Bert Rutan, aircraft designer and aerospace engineer for NASA once calculated the proportions of CO2 compared just to other atmospheric gases and concluded any alleged 'greenhouse effect' was a fantasy. Other NASA atmospheric scientists got together as "The Right Stuff" to decry climate alarmism. I still don't understand how 31,000 + scientists signing The Petition Project can be ignored as 'discredited.' It's easier to fling mud than make a case. Even the retirement of Judith Currie from teaching because of the politicization of 'climate science' has not seemed to make a dent in the continuous assault that 'we must believe.' It does not fly for Church and is not science. No data = No proof of diddly. Considering the future has not happened, that is a situation which will not change.

  7. This would be a catastrophe IF carbon dioxide were the sort of greenhouse gas it is alleged to be. But it is NOT. How do we differentiate between crying wolf and a genuine wolf? Formerly the answer would have been to consult an empirical science. We assumed that scientists were like George Washington or Honest Abe Lincoln. But now we need to discriminate between the good scientists who are generally retired and the bad ones who are climbing the academic ladder. For example, research shows that there is first a temperature increase followed rather later on by an increase in CO2 for which there is an explanation. However, if you are one of those who prefer a devil you know to one that you do not, I recommend sticking with the one that condemns CO2. And remember that water vapor is the chief green house gas--don't let your sprinkler just run and run. Avoid doing water vapor producing things like splashing water. Water is the new enemy.

  8. This disgusting spook idiot just pulls things out of its bum.CO2 is one of the worst greenhouse gasses.

The amount of manmade pollution is unprecedented. 200 species a day going under. Most of the oceans dead. 75 percent of the birds and insects gone. Humans burn quadrillion of gallons of hydrocarbons into the air ocean and soil yearly now.
There are 100 s of thousands of tons of the most chemical reaction-stimulating radionuclides on earth interacting with the fossil fuel products, plastics, poisons, pesticides, heavy metals, and other industrial poisons. The most catalytic, radioactive, mutagenic stuff in the universe interacting with all the CO2, dioxin that are burn products. Interacting with pesticides, plastics, methane, nitrates, fluro and chlorocarbons . highly radioactive gamma emitters that weaken metal surfaces and cause corrosion from gamma ray interactions with metal kernels.

TROPICAL ‘RUNAWAY GREENHOUSE’ PROVIDES INSIGHT TO VENUS

A region in the western tropical Pacific Ocean may help scientists understand how Venus lost all of its water and became a 900-degree inferno. The study of this local phenomenonby NASA scientists also should help researchers understand what conditions on Earth might lead to a similar fate here.
The phenomenon, called the ‘runaway greenhouse’ effect, occurs when a planet absorbs more energy from the sun than it can radiate back to space. Under these circumstances, the hotter the surface temperature gets, the faster it warms up. Scientists detect the signature of a runaway greenhouse when planetary heat loss begins to drop as surface temperature rises.Only one area on Earth – the western Pacific ‘warm pool’ just northeast of Australia – exhibits this signature. Because the warm pool covers only a small fraction of the Earth’s surface, the Earth as a whole never actually ‘runs away.’ However, scientists believe Venus did experience a global runaway greenhouse effect about 3 billion to 4 billion years ago.
"Soon afterthe planets were formed 4.5 billion years ago, Earth, Venus and Mars probably all had water. How did Earth manage to hold onto all of its water, while Venus apparently lost all of its water?" asked Maura Rabbette, Earth and planetary scientist at NASA Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley. "We have extensiveearth sciencedata to help address that question."
Rabbette and her co-investigators from NASA Ames, Christopher McKay, Peter Pilewskie and Richard Young, used atmospheric conditions above the Pacific Ocean, including data recorded by NASA’s Earth Observing System of satellites, to create a computer model of the runaway greenhouse effect. They determined that water vapor high in the atmosphere produced the local signature of a runaway greenhouse.
At sea surface temperatures above 80 F (27 C), evaporation loads the atmosphere with a critical amount of water vapor, one of the most efficient greenhouse gases. Water vapor allows solar radiation from the sun to pass through, but it absorbs a large portion of the infrared radiation coming from the Earth. If enough water vapor enters the troposphere, the weather layer of the atmosphere, it will trap thermal

    1. energy coming from the Earth, increasing the sea surface temperature even further.
The effect should result in a chain reaction loop where sea surface temperature increases, leading to increased atmospheric water vapor that leads to more trapped thermal energy. This would cause the temperature increase to ‘run away,’ causing more and more water loss through evaporation from the ocean. Luckily for Earth, sea surface temperatures never reach more than about 87 F (30.5 C), and so the runaway phenomenon does not occur.
"It’s very intriguing. What is limiting this effect over the warm pool of the Pacific?" asked Young, a planetary scientist. He suggests that cloud cover may affect how much energy reaches or escapes Earth, or that the ocean and atmosphere may transport trapped energy away from the local hotspot. "If we can model the outgoing energy flux, then maybe we can begin to understand what limits sea surface temperature on Earth," he said. The Ames researchers are not the first to study the phenomenon, but no consensus has been reached regarding the energy turnover or the limitation of sea surface temperature.
Rabbette analyzed clear-sky data above the tropical Pacific from March 2000 to July 2001. She determined that water vapor above 5 kilometers (3 miles) altitude in the atmosphere contributes significantly to the runaway greenhouse signature. She found that at 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) above the Pacific warm pool, the relative humidity in the atmosphere can be greater than 70 percent - more than three times the normal range. In nearby regions of the Pacific where the sea surface temperature is just a few degrees cooler, the atmospheric relative humidity is only 20 percent. These drier regions of the neighboring atmosphere may contribute to stabilizing the local runaway greenhouse effect, Rabbette said.
It is important to note that the Ames team uses real climate information such as relative humidity and temperature–not hypothetical numbers–in the Moderate Resolution Atmospheric Radiative Transfer, or MODTRAN, modeling program. The program calculates how much energy escapes back to space from the top of Earth’s atmosphere. The researchers plan to experiment with the model to test the runaway greenhouse signature’s sensitivity to climate conditions. By varying the abundance of other greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and by adding clouds in the model, they will see the overall effect on the outgoing energy.
The model may help researchers uncover why Venus experienced a complete runaway greenhouse and lost its water over a period of several hundred million to a billion years. The research may also help determine which planets in the so-called ‘habitable zone’ of a solar system might lack water, an essential ingredient for life as we know it.

  9. They talk about pollution in this article. They underestimate the impact of radionuclides pollution as they always have. The do not talk about radionuclide pollution specifically. Radionuclides are the most poisonous, mutagenic and reactive substances known.
Dr. busbys last video was of him using a gamma spectrometer, by the Baltic sea, in Lithuania to detect cesium 137.
There is far more cesium 137 in the area, than can be accounted for by Chernobyl.
Citizen radionuclide detection since fukushima, has slowed.

The bgeigie is a high quality pancake monitor that picks up alpha. There are still bgeigie networks. U do not hear about them.

One effectively has a gamma spectrometer, if you have a good pancake Geiger and scintillator. The combination would cost about 1100 to 2500 bucks. U can extrapolate radionuclide identities and quantities using the combined data of these two instruments. Pavey and a few others were doing it. Maybe they still are.
It is scarey to watch Dr Busby go out with his gamma spectrometer and, tell you that there are higher levels of the worst radionudes than he anticipated.
There is currently a die-off of reindeer in Scandinavia and the arctic going on

Salt-Water Fish Extinction Seen By 2048
    UPDATED ON: NOVEMBER 3, 2006 / 7:59 PM / WEBMD
The apocalypse has a new date: 2048.
That's when the world's oceans will be empty of fish, predicts an international team of ecologists and economists. The cause: the disappearance of species due to overfishing, pollution, habitat loss, and climate change.
The study by Boris Worm, PhD, of Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, -- with colleagues in the U.K., U.S., Sweden, and Panama -- was an effort to understand what this loss of ocean species might mean to the world.
The researchers analyzed several different kinds of data. Even to these ecology-minded scientists, the results were an unpleasant surprise.

    1. "I was shocked and disturbed by how consistent these trends are -- beyond anything we suspected," Worm says in a news release.
"This isn't predicted to happen. This is happening now," study researcher Nicola Beaumont, PhD, of the Plymouth Marine Laboratory, U.K., says in a news release.
"If biodiversity continues to decline, the marine environment will not be able to sustain our way of life. Indeed, it may not be able to sustain our lives at all," Beaumont adds.
Already, 29% of edible fish and seafood species have declined by 90% -- a drop that means the collapse of these fisheries.
But the issue isn't just having seafood on our plates. Ocean species filter toxins from the water. They protect shorelines. And they reduce the risks of algae blooms such as the red tide.
"A large and increasing proportion of our population lives close to the coast; thus the loss of services such as flood control and waste detoxification can have disastrous consequences," Worm and colleagues say.
The researchers analyzed data from 32 experiments on different marine environments.
They then analyzed the 1,000-year history of 12 coastal regions around the world, including San Francisco and Chesapeake bays in the U.S., and the Adriatic, Baltic, and North seas in Europe.
Next, they analyzed fishery data from 64 large marine ecosystems.
And finally, they looked at the recovery of 48 protected ocean areas.
Their bottom line: Everything that lives in the ocean is important. The diversity of ocean life is the key to its survival. The areas of the ocean with the most different kinds of life are the healthiest.
But the loss of species isn't gradual. It's happening fast -- and getting faster, the researchers say.
Worm and colleagues call for sustainable fisheries management, pollution control, habitat maintenance, and the creation of more ocean reserves.
This, they say, isn't a cost; it's an investment that will pay off in lower insurance costs, a sustainable fish industry, fewer natural disasters, human health, and more.
"It's not too late. We can turn this around," Worm says. "But less than 1% of the global ocean is effectively protected right now."
Worm and colleagues report their findings in the Nov. 3 issue of Science.
