United Nations Human Rights Council a Sick Parody

The Mainichi is reporting on recent elections to the UN Human Rights Council, which seems to me to be a complete SHAM. Here is its mission:
UN Human Rights Council: What we do http://www.ohchr.org/EN/AboutUs/Pages/WhatWeDo.aspx
As the principal United Nations office mandated to promote and protect human rights for all, OHCHR leads global human rights efforts speaks out objectively in the face of human rights violations worldwide. We provide a forum for identifying, highlighting and developing responses to today's human rights challenges, and act as the principal focal point of human rights research, education, public information, and advocacy activities in the United Nations system.
Many years ago one of my doctoral students wrote his dissertation on the politics of UN security resolutions and Chapter VII Interventions in violent conflicts:

Abu Mboka. The Politics of Chapter VII Interventions in Violent Conflicts https://www.amazon.com/Politics-Chapter-Interventions-Violent-Conflicts/dp/383643721X

Dr. Mboka found that politics were consistently prioritized over human rights, even in the wake of horrific violations. No surprise.

With this in mind, consider the politics implicated in the current membership elections:
Japan elected to serve on U.N. Human Rights Council. The Mainichi, October 29, 2016 (Mainichi Japan) http://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20161029/p2g/00m/0dm/035000c

NEW YORK (Kyodo) -- Japan was one of 14 countries elected by secret ballot Friday to serve on the 47-nation U.N. Human Rights Council, marking the fourth time it has sat on the panel.  Japan, which was one of four candidates for the Asia-Pacific region's four open seats, received 177 votes to serve on the organization charged with strengthening and protecting human rights around the globe.

Of the Asian nations, Tokyo took the second highest number of votes after China which received 180, followed by Iraq with 173 and Saudi Arabia with 152. Before the election, Human Rights Watch, an organization that monitors rights in some 90 countries, had spoken out with concerns about the records of China, Saudi Arabia and Iraq and the fact that all four were guaranteed to be elected.
Hypocrisy is a particularly dangerous and degenerative affliction for any institution allegedly dedicated to the preservation of human rights.

  4. My grandfather was full-blooded Navajo. He worked in the Happy Jack Uranium mine. That mine killed many people. It drains into the Colorado. My grandfather worked at Halchita. He died in the 1960's, from lung cancer at 50. The UN should investigate that. He did not smoke.

    1. Thank you for sharing your history. It is a good reminder of the human cost of the uranium supply chain.

  5. The latest from mining awareness. Why does not the UN care about these people's human rights and the rights of indigenous people to have safe clean water?
