Comparing Longevity of Radioactive Fallout from Nuclear Bombs and Nuclear Power Plant Disasters

Kodama Tatsuhiko, Professor and head of the Radioisotope Center at the University of Tokyo addressed the Committee on Welfare and Labor of the House of Representatives on July 27, 2011. Below is an excerpt from his comments on Fukushima "source" terms and fallout longevity:
CITATION: Kodama Tatsuhiko (trans Kyoko Selden) Radiation Effects on Health: Protect the Children of Fukushima. The Asia Pacific Journal Vol 9, Issue 32 No 4, August 8, 2011, http://japanfocus.org/-Kodama-Tatsuhiko/3587

When we calculate on the basis of the knowledge available at our Radioisotope Center, in terms of the quantity of heat, the equivalent of 29.6 Hiroshima a-bombs leaked.

Converted to uranium, an amount equivalent to 20 Hiroshima a-bombs is estimated to have leaked.

What is further dreadful is that, according to what we know so far, when we compare the amount of radiation that remained after the a-bomb and that of radiation from the nuclear plant, that of the former goes down to one-thousandth after one year whereas radioactive contaminants of the latter are reduced to only one-tenth.
In other words, in thinking about the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster, the first premise is that, as in the case of Chernobyl, an amount of radiation equivalent to tens of a-bombs was released and far greater contamination remains afterward compared with the a-bomb.
Keep in mind that he is describing the "initial" atmospheric release. His estimate does not include ongoing atmospheric emissions, nor does it include contamination of the ocean and aquifer.

  1. That does not include the fuel pool fire coverups

  2. Fukushima happened for lots of reasons. Faulty design, bad location, maybe sabotage, an earthquake and Tsunami . . . very poor judgement on the part of Japanese gov and business This is the kind of judgement though that is common place on the planet. Live and learn. Perhaps the big truth is that humans just aren't up to what the planet demands at this point and will therefore do more very stupid things. Until they have exterminated themselves? Or we have exterminated ourselves. They are the thick headed ones . . . who have the money and power and consider themselves kings of the earth. Whatever stopped the Greeks and Romans from creating modern science was a blessing as it is matches for the children and the houses are burning down.

  3. There was not sabotage at Fukushima for crying out loud it was hit by a 9.0 earthquake. Why don't you go to Above top secret or Godlike productions where your spook fairy tales would be more welcome.

    1. Why were the buildings in Fukushima not knocked down then but such a powerful earthquake? I think it is best to consider all possibilities until they are definitely ruled out. Insults are neither evidence nor sound arguments but merely a sign that the idea is threatening. Anyway Japan does not use our earthquake measurement scale.

    2. In my experience of working at factories (an NPP is a power factory), there is always sabotage, major and minor, because there are always people who dislike their workplace or their bosses and coworkers. I will give you an example of serious possible sabotage at F1 if you want one.

Earthquakes: an M9 earthquake is M9 wherever you are. But the seismic intensity fades with distance so Japan has a system for measuring a tremor in a certain locality. The 311 quake at F1 was probably a 7 on the Japanese scale, which is scary.

    3. cough, cough... the quake- at sea - was said to be 9.0 - that does not equate to the same onshore. explain why Daini did not suffer similar wreckage as Daiichi even though Daini had similar earthquake and tsunami conditions... why has the Israeli security team never been required to reveal their security reports? what was that missile shaped camera and why did an Israeli security team tell TEPCO workers to shut up when they asked about it being placed in unit 3? Too many unanswered questions to leave it alone.

    4. Grant. How do you know what kind of shape daiini is in? That is a ridiculous argument. We saw daiichi footage and they still lie about the meltdowns. I do not like Zionism either but projecting their bull on fuku stretches things. There was probably a partial meltdown in Taipei. There were other reactors in Japan damaged by the earthquake. Jumping down rabbit holes either way distracts from the fact that the Japanese are trying to open old damaged reactors in seismologically unstable Japan. It also does not help address the ongoing meltdowns and contamination of the pacific. Israel is a contaminated mess too. Nuclear is totally insane. Doesn't even have to be embellished it's so bloody crazy.

    5. Yes, while the events at Daini were published to a certain extent in the Japanese media in 2011, there was very little discussion and the topic disappeared from the news. It was actually VERY close to being similar to Daiichi. At the very least, one reactor partially melted down. A Daiichi-like disaster was averted by a very savvy NPP chief who managed to get a Self-Defence Force helicopter to fly in a heavy-duty cable from the nearest location with power and overcome the SBO in the nick of time. That's why (in answer to the question above). Explaining why Daiichi had its accident when Daini did not is more difficult.

  4. Some of them are spooks and some of them are the aging version of video game addicts. Quite addicted to one rabbit hole conspiracy after another. Sheesh. No one trusts government anymore but, the rabbit hole jumping is not rational and makes no good sense. It just distracts, confuses, and scares people. Off who want to keep up with what's going on. It also throws off those who want to start from the beginning.

  5. The "Everything is a conspiracy crowd," gives people who have known how bad nuclear was for years, a bad name. They do the same to 9/11 truthers.

    1. All theories or hypotheses are tentative; the ones the pass through the most tests seem as though they are facts but that never happens . . . quantum theory is still tentative. All criminal cases involving more than one person receive conspiracy theory presentations by the police or FBI then they may go to court where a jury attempts to decide but perhaps they are wrong and so it goes the world never gives certainty. The Greeks knew this. Have we forgotten? Scientists have a bad habit of presenting hypotheses as though they were cold hard facts. Really they should say there is a high probability that or it certainly seems as though that. I suppose it is a form of sloth.

  6. I find it hard to know where the boundaries of truth lie today when so much "news" is deliberately spun deception.
