Spent Fuel Pool Problems at Daiichi Responsible for Recent Emissions?

Maybe the spent fuel problem is responsible for the heavy emissions visible with the webcams:

Blackout halts cooling system at Fukushima plant NHK March 18 2013 http://www3.nhk.or.jp/daily/english/20130319_01.html

[Excerpted] TEPCO officials say a power blackout has suspended a cooling system for used nuclear fuel at the struggling Fukushima Daiichi power plant.

...The affected system is intended to cool 3 pools containing about 2,100 spent rods from the plant's number 1, 3, and 4 reactors.

...The officials said it will take about 4 days for the pools to exceed 65 degrees -- the firm's limit.

They added the blackout has interrupted the cooling system for another pool containing about 6,300 rods. It has also affected part of a system that disposes of contaminated water... [end]

  1. Majia - it's all going to burn.

We've known that for about 18 months now. Whether it is now, or next month or next year or over the next 50 years - it's all going to burn. It's been two years, and the most technically advanced nation on the planet has made zero progress in stopping it.

The only thing they've successfully stopped is the media.

The only thing they could have done - should have done is to remove the Common spent fuel from the site, as well as as much other fuel they could.

That would have prevented the inevitable domino burn that I fear will happen.

Some in Japan know their fate. The economy is failing. The population is dwindling. Their health has got to be affected as well.

I expect their desire to continue to fight it is dwindling a bit.

    J.
