Japan's Nuclear Utilities Spending on Public Relations

 

The Asahi Shimbun has had quite a few excellent articles over the last couple of months, exposing corruption and fraud in decontamination of Fukushima radiation throughout Fukushima Prefecture. It seems to me that The Asahi Shimbun has been conducting journalism in the public interest recently. They are to be applauded.

Here is an interesting article by the Asahi about spending on public relations by the Japanese nuclear industry:

[Excerpted] Nine of Japan’s electric utilities spent a combined 2.4 trillion yen ($27.6 billion) to sponsor TV programs and run ads in print media over four decades to promote nuclear power and underscore the safety of their plants, The Asahi Shimbun has found.

The lavish campaign apparently helped utilities to expand their influence on media outlets and allowed them to hold considerable sway in objecting to negative reporting on nuclear power.
The utilities’ PR spending began to soar in the late 1970s and, in 1986, topped twice the level registered around the 1979 Three Mile Island nuclear accident in the United States, according to the investigation by The Asahi Shimbun. In 1986, the Chernobyl disaster occurred in what is now Ukraine.

Majia here: The nuclear industry in Japan, the US, the UK, and elsewhere have worked very hard to spin lies about nuclear being a safe and clean energy source, when the truth is exactly the opposite. Notice how spending increased significantly after major nuclear disasters.

The truth is that mining and refining uranium are costly, energy intensive, and extraordinarily polluting.

Nuclear power plants routinely vent tritium, which emits high intensity beta particles capable of producing cellular and DNA damage. Tritium is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen and is impossible to filter out of water and air.

Nuclear decontamination and waste are long term problems with no cost-effective solutions.

Nuclear power plant accidents produce cataclysmic risks for populations because they spew radioactive isotopes, such as uranium, plutonium, radiocesium, and radioiodine, widely. These radioactive isotopes end up in our food supply and water and they can produce terrible genetic effects both within and across generations.

So, why do large segments of the public persist in believing that nuclear is clean, safe, and efficient?
