Stop "Recycling" With Radioactive Materials

Tell DOE: "Recycling" with radioactive materials is NOT acceptable!

The Department of Energy (DOE) is considering a plan to allow radioactively-contaminated metal from nuclear weapons facilities to be “recycled.” This would allow this toxic metal to be mixed with clean recycled metal and enter into normal commerce—where it could be turned into anything from your next pants zipper to baby toys. Act below to stop this outrage!

  1. I remember back in the 80s there was a proposal to recycle nuclear waste into children's toys. The present administration is at least as fascistic and revanchist as the Reagan administration was, with a lot more power.

  2. I am trying to do research on this to write a letter to get as many people as possible to sign. I am having trouble finding backup for the claim. Can you provide a link that shows that this plan is being forwarded again now? I see evidence it was pushed a decade ago but can't find anything other than requests to tell the DOE not to do it. Really appreciate it.

    1. Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-level_waste)

In 10 C.F.R. § 20.2002, the NRC reserves the right to grant a free release of radioactive waste. The overall activity of such a disposal cannot exceed 1 mrem/yr and the NRC regards requests on a case-by-case basis. Low-level waste passing such strict regulations is then disposed of in a landfill with other garbage. Items allowed to be diposed of in this way are: glow-in-the-dark watches (radium) and smoke detectors (americium) among other things. [end excerpt]

Here is a discussion of "free release" of low-level radioactive waste in Canada http://iicph.org/free-release-of-radioactive-materials-and-aggregate-recycling

Here is a great document dated 2007 explaining "free release" of nuclear waste

I hope that these resources help.

when you search use the phrase "free release" of nuclear waste.

      best wishes
