Fukushima Updates May 21

The scary dimension of the situation at Fukushima is that it seems out-of-control and unstoppable.

Blogger EX-SKF has an important report out today (block quote):

Hiroaki Koide of Kyoto University: "No One Knows How Fukushima Could Be Wound Down" As the Corium May Be Melting Through the Foundation

"So says Hiroaki Koide of Kyoto University Research Reactor Institute, in a telephone interview on May 19 with independent video-journalist Tetsuo Jinbo of Videonews.com (who did the video report of the 20-kilometer radius evacuation zone back in April, showing cows and dogs prowling the deserted towns).

"Koide is practically agreeing with Christopher Busby that there's not much anyone can do to stop the release of radioactive materials and further contamination of air, soil and water, other than somehow "entomb" the reactors (a.k.a. Chernobyl solution).

"Koide reiterates his view that the corium (he says "melted fuel" and "melted core" in the interview for lay people, but it is melted fuel, and anything else that melted with the fuel inside the RPV) may have already escaped the Containment Vessel in the Reactor 1….

"…We're in the uncharted territory that we enter for the first time ever since the human race started to use nuclear power.

Already, Fukushima has had more impact (into the ocean) than Chernobyl

Block quote:

"Ken Buesseler, a chemical oceanographer at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.“When it comes to the oceans, however,” says Buesseler, “the impact of Fukushima exceeds Chernobyl.”

"Radionuclides in seawater have been reported from the Fukushima plant’s discharge canals, from coastal waters five to ten kilometers south of the plant, and from thirty kilometers offshore.

“Levels of some radionuclides are at least an order of magnitude higher than the highest levels in 1986 in the Baltic and Black Seas, the two ocean water bodies closest to Chernobyl,” says Buesseler.
He has been awarded a rapid-response grant from the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Division of Ocean Sciences to establish baseline concentrations of several radionuclides in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

“Finding this information early on is key to understanding the severity of the releases and related public health issues,” says Buesseler.

"The release notes that he and colleagues will establish a baseline radionuclide data set for the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, using an east-to-west network of sampling stations where the ability to retrieve ocean water samples already exists.

Harvey Wasserman is reporting on the situation and what this means at Counterpunch (quote)

Fukushima may be in an apocalyptic downward spiral.
Forget the corporate-induced media coma that says otherwise…or nothing at all.

Lethal radiation is spewing unabated. Emission levels could seriously escalate. There is no end in sight. The potential is many times worse than Chernobyl.
Containing this disaster may be beyond the abilities of Tokyo Electric or the Japanese government.
There is no reason to incur further unnecessary risk. With all needed resources, it's time for the world's best scientists and engineers to take charge.
Even then the outcome is unclear.
For a brief but terrifying overview, consult Dr. Chris Busby as interviewed by RT/TV.
Fukushima Units One, Two and Three are all in various stages of melting down.
Molten fuel at Unit One may have burned through its reactor pressure vessel, with water poured in to cool it merely pouring out the bottom.
A growing pond of highly radioactive liquid is softening the ground and draining into the ocean.
There is no way to predict where these molten masses of fuel will yet go.
Especially in the event of an aftershock, steam and hydrogen explosions could blow out what's left of the containments.
The extra plutonium in the MOX fuel at Unit Three is an added liability.
At least one spent fuel pool has been on fire.
The site has already suffered at least two hydrogen explosions.

Some believe a fission explosion may also have occurred.
All have weakened the structures and support systems on site....."

MAJIA HERE: the entire situation seems to deteriorating and unprecedented. We must watch it closely.
