Russia captures ruined Chernobyl nuclear plant and local activity increases atmospheric radioactivity:

[Extract] Chernobyl radiation spike probably from Russian tanks disturbing dust. After Russian forces captured the ruined Chernobyl nuclear power plant on 24 February, sensors at the site report a spike in radiation levels. 

 The State Inspectorate for Nuclear Regulation of Ukraine reported that radiation levels around Chernobyl rose today, but attributed them to “movement of a large number of heavy military equipment through the exclusion zone and the release of contaminated radioactive dust into the air”. 

The organisation said that the buildings containing the reactor were intact and unaffected. Official figures from the site record outdoor radiation levels as high as 32.3 microsieverts per hour. Indoor figures are higher than that, but Bruno Merk at the University of Liverpool, UK, says that these come from sensors inside the containment buildings and aren’t related to environmental levels. 

A citizen data-collection service called SaveEcoBot also showed a spike in radiation levels across the Chernobyl power plant. One sensor recorded a level of 65.5 microsieverts per hour at 9.50pm local time on 24 Feburary, while the same sensor recorded levels around 3 microsieverts per hour in the days before the invasion. Francis Livens at the University of Manchester, UK, says the levels being seen are well below those that would cause acute radiation sickness, but could be “the sort of thing that will give you cancer in 10, 15, 20 years’ time”. “If I’m a radiation worker in a lab at 3 microsieverts an hour, even if I spend ludicrous amounts of time in there, I’m going to be under my dose limit. If I had 60 in my lab, I would be wanting to know why, because at 60 you get up to doses that would make me twitch relatively quickly,” he says.

….Among the non-coronavirus-specific claims are deaths from heart and circulatory issues and neurological disorders, he said. “We anticipate that they’ll start to be less impactful over the course of 2022 but we do anticipate that we’ll still at least see some elevated levels throughout the year,” he said....

 

We will see whether these excess deaths of heart, circulatory, and neurological complications wax or wane....

'We have a new bunch of emperers and they're the people who vote the shares in the index funds,'...

BlackRock reported assets under management of more than $10 trillion in the fourth quarter of 2021"

 

So much for democracy and the grassroots power of self-determined citizens. 

However, our new emperors are deluded in their narcissistic self-aggrandizement and their totalitarian visions will fail. Unfortunately our civilization may fail with them.

ABSTRACT: Some theorists argue that moral bioenhancement ought to be compulsory. I take this argument one step further, arguing that if moral bioenhancement ought to be compulsory, then its administration ought to be covert rather than overt. 

This is to say that it is morally preferable for compulsory moral bioenhancement to be administered without the recipients knowing that they are receiving the enhancement. My argument for this is that if moral bioenhancement ought to be compulsory, then its administration is a matter of public health, and for this reason should be governed by public health ethics. 

I argue that the covert administration of a compulsory moral bioenhancement program better conforms to public health ethics than does an overt compulsory program. In particular, a covert compulsory program promotes values such as liberty, utility, equality, and autonomy better than an overt program does. 

Thus, a covert compulsory moral bioenhancement program is morally preferable to an overt moral bioenhancement program.
