The view of units 3 and 4 is more sedate. New machinery can be seen in front of the white vent stack.
News on the plant is scarce unless one goes to the TEPCO website directly.

Yanobe apologised on his website Friday for “discomforting” some people with his artwork, which was created in the wake of the Fukushima Daiichi power plant meltdown and installed near JR Fukushima station in the city of Fukushima on August 3.

Among the many commemorative events all around the Peace Park in Hiroshima, Japan on August 6 was an evening memorial service for victims of both the Bomb and nuclear power by Go West, Come West. It is a civic association of evacuees from the March, 2011 Fukushima disaster and their supporters who are challenging the Japanese government’s response to the ongoing catastrophe affecting all of eastern Japan as inadequate and cruel.
This is their story about how police then arrested one of their members on trumped-up charges.

MOSCOW — In the aptly named city of Asbest, in the Ural Mountains 900 miles (1500 km) northeast of Moscow, the dominance of Russia’s asbestos industry — the world’s largest — is on clear display. Just east of the city is the massive open-pit Uralasbest mine. At seven miles (11 km) long and 1-½ miles (2.5 km) wide, it is nearly half the size of Manhattan — and more than a thousand feet (300 meters) deep. Nearly half a million metric tons of asbestos are gouged from the mine each year.
Seventy thousand people live in Asbest, once known as “the dying city” for its extraordinary rates of lung cancer and other asbestos-related diseases. But Uralasbest does not appear to have suffered any loss of status. It and other Russian asbestos producers operate with the swagger that comes from unwavering government support. Controversy bypasses them, perhaps in no small measure because Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is their ally. Nothing, it seems, is allowed to interfere with an industry that employs 400,000 people and, along with its counterpart in neighboring Kazakhstan, generates at least $800 million a year.

226Ra has been measured in five asbestos group minerals. The activity levels are variable, are consistent with other forms of rock and range from 0.01–0.4 pCi 226Ra/g. Alpha particles from asbestos fibers immobilized in the lower lung near pleural surfaces and in the upper lung on bronchial surfaces may be implicated in initiating mesothelioma and bronchial carcinoma.

Get a geiger counter that measures alpha, beta, and gamma. For samples that have water. The water, has to be evaporated, leaving a residue. For other things with water, they should be dehydrated. Many smoke alarms have a radiation source in them, that will tell you how well your geiger counter is. Dont listen to bullshit, about background radiation.
DeleteRadiation detection with a good detector is simple. Keep it so.
You can tell with a radiation source, like a uranite or other safe sources, that are for sale. There are also thorium welding rod, that your geiger is working properly. You will be able to tell, after getting a feel for the geiger counter.
You will know that there is
something radioactive around or, there are excess radionuclide particles, in the air.
Samples can also be gathered and sent to laboratories for mass spectrometry analysis of what radionuclides are present. MARCO kaltofen does this.
If you have a gamma scintillator and two good geiger counters, you can approximate what radionuclides are presents using extrapolation.

ReplyDeleteWhy is it that sticky jagged fibers, like fiberglass, dont cause mesothelioma when embedded in lung tissue yet, asbestos does cause cancer and mesothelioma. It is because asbestos fibers, are radioactive. They are mineral fibers, extracted from the earth. Asbestos fibers, contain radium. When lodged in soft tissue, the asbestos fibers, constantly emmit alpha rays that are mutagenic, chemotoxic, and carcinogenic to the surrounding tissue microenvironment.
