Obama Administration Succumbs to Hawks?

I've been following the debates about no first use of nuclear weapons by the US. I was pleased to hear that the Obama Admin was trying to get rid of the "first use" capacity:
Obama Administration Reconsiders "First Use" Policy for Nuclear Weapons http://majiasblog.blogspot.com/2016/08/obama-administration-reconsiders-first.html
However, US hawks, and allies such as Japan and South Korea have urged the admin to maintain the first strike capacity because they fear the rise of China, which is expected to match US nuclear capabilities in the 2020s.

It appears that the hawks have won again:
David Sanger & William Broad. Sep 5, 2016. Obama Unlikely to Vow No First Use of Nuclear Weapons. The New York Times, http://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/06/science/obama-unlikely-to-vow-no-first-use-of-nuclear-weapons.html?emc=edit_th_20160906&nl=todaysheadlines&nlid=32962000

President Obama, who has weighed ruling out a first use of a nuclear weapon in a conflict, appears likely to abandon the proposal after top national security advisers argued that it could undermine allies and embolden Russia and China, according to several senior administration officials.

Mr. Obama considers a reduction in the role of nuclear weapons as critical to his legacy. But he has been chagrined to hear critics, including some former senior aides, argue that the administration’s second-term nuclear modernization plans, costing up to $1 trillion in coming decades, undermine commitments he made in 2009.For months, arms control advocates have argued for a series of steps to advance the pledge he made to pursue “a world without nuclear weapons.”
The idea that "the center cannot hold" keeps circulating in my mind.

I wonder if all complex human civilizations experience bouts of homicidal psychosis?

I really need to go back and read Freud's Madness and Civilization.

  1. There will not be much left when the nuclear powered navy obliterates what is left of the oceans from their nuclear reactors being blown to bits and melted down. There will also be a few hundred reactor meltdowns and spent fuel fires. The catastrophic dispersal of radionuclide's will destroy life on earth.

  2. The Ukraine is very close to stage 5. Japan is at stage 3 nearing step 4. Such is the manifestation of accidental nuclear devastation. From Dmitry Orlov

Stage 1: Financial collapse. Faith in “business as usual” is lost.

Stage 2: Commercial collapse. Faith that “the market shall provide” is lost.

Stage 3: Political collapse. Faith that “the government will take care of you” is lost.

Stage 4: Social collapse. Faith that “your people will take care of you” is lost.

Stage 5: Cultural collapse. Faith in “the goodness of humanity” is lost.

A homicidal mass killing of humanity through nuclear war may not be that different from mass killings by homicidal maniacs we read about in the news every day.

Things are going on of which we do not hear from the general realm of knowing because in some instances they are simply not known. When it comes to the nuclear the True Believer may actually wish for Russia and the USA to engage in nuclear war and to reduce the world population. Some may regard Fukushima as some kind of God or Allah sent gift. What is the cost of a practical and down to earth mentality at the present time? And how would one come by it? Perhaps reading old books would be a good start.
