Is Japanese Cedar Pollen Radioactivity Amplifying Allergan's Effect on Skin Damage?

The Mainichi is reporting that allergans from cedar pollen cause skin damage and is urging people to wash off pollen from their skin:

Japanese cedar pollen causes damage to skin: research team, The Mainichi, January 23, 2016 (Mainichi Japan) http://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20160123/p2a/00m/0na/022000c

Pollen from the Cryptomeria japonica (Japanese cedar) tree lowers the skin's barrier function by causing evaporation of moisture and inhibiting oil secretions, researchers said.

The findings, which were reported by a joint research group affiliated with the Shiseido Life Science Research Center and the Japan Science and Technology Agency, among other institutions, make it clear that Japanese cedar pollen not only affects the eyes and nose, but is also part of a mechanism causing skin damage....

..."Even individuals with healthy skin experience lower skin barrier functioning from stress and other causes," noted Shiseido Life Science Research Center chief researcher Mitsuhiro Denda.

He added, "If (the Cryj1) protein gets into the skin and decreases the skin barrier function even further, it is possible that a negative spiral could be unleashed, whereby inflammation worsens, itchiness increases, scratching ensues, and the inflammation then becomes chronic."

"Pollen that has made its way onto the skin should be washed off as soon as possible," Denda says. He also points toward the "importance of protecting the skin through a regimen of care."

One wonders when reading the excerpt from above what the other causes are that might increase the ordinary damage from the pollen antigen.

When considering this question, I recalled previous stories and scientific reports indicating that pollen from Japanese cedars contained relatively high amounts of radionuclides from Fukushima:

Akio Akama, Yoshiyuki Kiyono1, Tatsuo Kanazashi1, Koji Shichi (2013) Survey of radioactive contamination of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) shoots and male flowers in Fukushima prefecture Japanese Journal for Environment 55 (2), 105-111, 2013, http://ci.nii.ac.jp/els/110009804563.pdf?id=ART0010304703&type=pdf&lang=en&host=cinii&order_no=&ppv_type=0&lang_sw=&no=1454080197&cp=

The Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in March 2011 contaminated wide areas of eastern Japan with radioactive fallout, especially Fukushima prefecture. Approximately 70% of the land area of Fukushima prefecture is covered by forest, primarily sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) timber plantations… (p. 105)
…male sugi flowers develop near the tip of branches, and both male flowers and young shoots would likely accumulate radiocesium translocated within sugi trees. Furthermore, continuous absorption of radiocesium from soil would cause the radioactivity of wood to increase. These characteristics of sugi suggest that sugi pollen dispersal might accelerate the diffusion of radiocesium from forests to suburbs. Therefore, in this study, we surveyed radiocesium concentrations in male flowers and shoots in sugi over a wide area of Fukushima prefecture, and clarified the state of radioactive contamination of sugi trees directly after the accident. (p. 106).

We collected male sugi flowers from 131 sugi plantations in Fukushima prefecture in November or December 2011, and we collected male flowers and shoots from 24 of these 131 sugi plantations in November or December 2012. The 24 plantations were selected in 2012 to cover the entire range of air dose rate variation in 131 plantations with almost regular intervals. The radioactive contamination caused by the accident in March 2011 was so heavy that effects of atmospheric nuclear tests or Chernobyl accident were negligible in this study.

Radiocesium deposition (i.e., the total activity in the organic layer and surface soil (0-5 cm)) was highly correlated with the air dose rate in 2011 (Fig. 1). The concentration of radiocesium in male flowers in 2011 was also correlated to the air dose rate, measured at 1 m above ground, and their relationship could be approximated by a logarithmic linear equation. The measured concentration ranged between < 0.1 kBq kg-1 and 260 kBq kg-1 (Fig. 2)…. The radiocesium in the soil (0-5 cm) of this plantation, however, was over ten times the amount of the radiocesium in the organic layer on the forest floor…

And another study came to the same conclusion:
Kanasashi T1, Sugiura Y2, Takenaka C2, Hijii N2, Umemura M Radiocesium distribution in sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) in eastern Japan: translocation from needles to pollen. J Environ Radioact. 2015 Jan;139:398-406. doi: 10.1016/j.jenvrad.2014.06.018. Epub 2014 Jul 16.

We assessed the radiocesium contamination of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) forests in eastern Japan from November 2012 to February 2013, including 80 sites in Fukushima and 35 sites in other regions (Tohoku and Kanto-Koshinetsu), by measuring the (137)Cs concentrations in needles of different ages, male flowers, and pollen. Over a wide geographic area, needles that were present at the time of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident contained much higher (137)Cs concentrations than needles that emerged after the accident. This result, together with visual analysis of (137)Cs distribution using autoradiography, indicated that some of the (137)Cs derived from direct fallout remained on the surface of the older needles. Since we also detected (137)Cs in younger needles and male flowers, we concluded that (137)Cs was translocated toward the tips of sugi needles. The (137)Cs concentration in male flowers was higher than and positively correlated with that in the currently growing (2012) needles. Also, a positive relationship was observed between the (137)Cs concentration of male flowers and pollen, and they were found to be nearly identical (137)Cs concentration. These results indicate the occurrence of acropetal translocation of (137)Cs from old needles to young needles, male flowers and pollen. However, the results as related to (137)Cs concentration in the needles of three different ages differed from the results of similar studies conducted more than 4 y after the Chernobyl accident. This suggests that, 2 y after the Fukushima Dai-ichi NPP accident, the distribution of (137)Cs in the sugi forests has not yet reached a steady state.

Might radioactivity in Japan's pollen be amplifying its potential to cause skin and other types of cellular damage?

  1. Reminds me of the effect of asbestos an mesothelial tissue. Mined asbestos fibers get stuck in endotheilal tissue. Some of the unlodgable irritating fibers create an inflammatory cascade that some said leads to cancer which does not really make sense.

Asbestos comes from mountain mines that have lead and other minerals that contain, thorium, radium, and even polonium. Since the relationship of ionizing radiation to cancer is and has long been suppressed in mediacl communities and rearch, only a few toxicologists talk about asbestos fibers being alpha emitters. The fiber inflammation theory of asbestosis and mesotheliomas does not make so much sense.

Look at the inflammation response from over exposure to harmful uv radiation. Some say they have sun allergies but it is really a delayed hypersensitivity to the inflammation process started by uv ionizing radiation. The infalmmation processes and immune response of the body to trauma and what it sees as invading pathogens are complex biochemical and cell mediated humoral responses. There are probably two or three processes going on here. The pollen is getting stuck. It is setting off an inflammatory response. It is causing an IgE or immune allergic response as well.

  2. Well, we won't hold our breaths while someone who could investigate this scientifically comes forth. The gates to the Heaven of Science have been closed indefinitely. It seems like every conceivable poison is being released though radiation is by far the most potent and lethal. But glyphosate is a good runner up. I just came across information suggesting that it may have a stealth presence in vaccines via the gelatin used in their manufactures [Dr. Stephanie Seneff, a scientific researcher at MIT[.
We are certainly getting a lesson on the inter-connectedness of things and ridding ourselves of the illusion that things are solid and unchanging. The physical world is more like a soup wherein everything mixes together over time.
And of course people are breathing in this pollen and spreading it everywhere on clothing, vehicles and so forth.

  3. What does gelatin in vaccines have to do with radioisotope contamination of pollen in Japan? People in Japan are struggling for their very survival. Most People know what they need to do when they are injured or have an allergic reaction or dermatitis reaction from say junipers out in the country, but when you are constantly exposed to radioisotope contamination what can you do?

Just think of the risk of lung cancer and pulmonary inflammation from pollen that radioactive.
If I had any strange dermatitis that i could not get rid of or was terribly inflammed that I could correlate to a pollen full of radioactive cesium, I would be very scared. If my skin repeatedly became inflammed or turned into a seeping mess or looked like a squamous or basal cell precancers when pollen from the cedars came out i would get the hell out of there and get screened for skin cancer.

The fact of the matter is that many parts of japan are so contaminated they need to be evacuated as caldicott and others say.

High level radioisope contamination is omnipresent from Fukushima to Tokyo. Water in Tokyo is now 24% more radioactive than fukushima according to a recent fuku diary article.

    http://fukushima-diary.com/2016/01/cs-134137-detected-from-over-40-percent-of-fish-in-20km-radius-area-outside-
    of-fukushima-plant-port/

If there is this much cesium in the fish by fukushima there is contamination all along the coast of japan and most people in japan are eating contminated fish caught close the east coast of japan

    http://fukushima-diary.com/2016/01/nras-data-shows-contamination-level-in-tokyo-tap-water-higher-than-fukushima-by-24-percent/

if the water in tokyo is now 24 percent more contaminted than fukushima which is 3 hours drive away most of north eastern and east central japan are contaminated.

I know william has used vaccines. I know that william would probably get a yellow fever vaccine if he went to south america. There are probably some bad vaccines out there. Some even contaminated with rdioisotopes by now. But guys like william would probably get the recommended vaccine regimens if he had to stay prolonged periods in africa or s america. Just do not understand why when the world is turning into a radioactive mess so little common sense left.

  4. I am no fan of roundup. It has two main ingredients. An enzyme inhibitor that is not particularly toxic to humans and a thickening and suspending agent that is used in a wide variety of foods, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical products. Just read any cosmetics bottle you have laidies, it will say polyethylene glycol or propyene glycol. These two emulsifying agents are everywhere in american society. Just like guar gum and gum arabic only they are synthetic. PEG and PPG are In hand creams. In Almond milk. In some antibiotics and antibiotic injectiosn. In the anesthetic injection your anesthtist uses on you before the surgeoen takes out your uterous or gall bladder.

The gel you are talking about in the vaccine is a thickening agent william. Not a direct toxin.

Exposure too massive amounts of the suspending and thickening agent used in the glyphosate herbicide roundup, propylene glycol like the farm workers in nicaragua are who work around lots of roundup, causes kidney problems because propylene glycol in excess is kinda like antifreeze. Too much of it for prolonged periods allows it to build up in our bodies as it cannot be excreted quickly enough. This causes kidney damage.

william there are two parts to roundup. The Glyphosate enzyme inhibitor and the suspending agent propylene glycol. If you look at any cosmetics they are chalked full of ppg and peg.

The cure for hepatitis C is a drug called PEG intron . It is half polyethylene glycol and half interferon. The PEG part of it is not particurlay toxic as it goes out of body quick enough to not build up while the interferon a natural immune polypeptide can be toxic.

Glypphosate the active ingredient of roundup was first synthesized in 1950 by Swiss chemist Henry Martin, who worked for the Swiss company Cilag. The work was never published.Stauffer Chemical patented the agent as a chemical chelator in 1964 as it binds and removes minerals such as calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc. It inhibits a plant enzyme involved in the synthesis of three aromatic amino acids: tyrosine, tryptophan, andphenylalanine and does not affect humans.
The fact that crazy fools like nuke nuts are trying to genetically modify crops to be more roundup reistant is pretty insane. Many things that we take for granted now in the united states europe japan food, water, pharmaceuticals are contaminated with radioisotopes. athere are probably vaccines mad in japan, china, india that are more contaminated more than we would like to know.

  5. It seems to me that across the concerns stated here is a common theme:

Lack of "expert" regard for the health and ecological consequences of technological innovations, ranging from nuclear power to Round-Up.

These problems are the same in that they were developed as "solutions" for problems (e.g., energy and food production) without full consideration or regard of unintended consequences, coupled with a steadfast UNWILLINGNESS to address those consequences once they become empirically detectable.

The synergistic effects of ubiquitous bio-accumlating agents aren't even open for public debate, so marginalized is that discussion.

Thank you all for your comments. I learn from them and they provoke discussion.

  6. Those same experts will tell you hormesis is the proper model for radiation exposure because they are hired guns. I am pretty expert in my field from years of hands on experience and learning. I probably have biases. Some things are common sense. Just sayin.

  7. Things changed so radically before and after world war 2. If antibiotics and vaccinations had not been introduced after world war 2, especially after nuclear bomb production and testing began most of us would probably not be here.

If Jenner had not vaccinated many anglo colonists for smallpox none of their descendants would be here. Remember
Lady Mary Montagu the english lady whose life was saved from small pox in the ottoman court by vaccination?
    http://www.muslimheritage.com/article/lady-montagu-and-introduction-smallpox-inoculation-england
There are bad medical and vaccine practices but one does not have to practice revisionist history or deny facts to see how much we have fouled the world. especially with nuclear. no weaseling our way out of this one.
