Yesterday's Event at Fukushima Daiichi

What caused yesterday's event, visualized here from afar in a screenshot from the Futaba cam:

Some commentators suggest that uranium gas is emerging from cracks in the ground as the melted corium under the Daiichi plant fissions in a seemingly endless dance of neutron feast and famine, as described by Potrblog (here).

I simply lack the expertise to assess the situation fully.

That said, I have assembled a growing body of facts reported by TEPCO, the Japanese Government, the media, and scientific authorities that support the following conclusions:

1. At least one of the melted cores resides either in the basement or underneath the plant entirely and is in direct contact with fresh water coursing through the site and emptying eventually into the Pacific Ocean. TEPCO has acknowledged this situation.

2. TEPCO must inject an additional 300-400 tons of water a day to cool melted fuel at the site, probably in both reactors and in spent fuel pools. TEPCO cannot capture all the contaminated water.

3. TEPCO cannot fully remove radionuclides from water it does capture. Only recently has it been able to remove strontium and now water with strontium removed counts as purified despite still containing other radionuclides, such as cesium and tritium.

4. TEPCO is running out of storage containers, which are leaking and may pose risks of explosions, and no doubt has been dumping water deliberately in addition to the significant "leaks" it has reported.

5. Strontium readings in Fukushima Daiichi's port reached a record high last month, a finding that is consistent with the German melt through scenario.

6. Unexplained major emission events, characterized by rapidly moving yellow, orange, brown and black emissions have been documented by webcam watchers over the years and the most significant of these events coincide with increased detections of Iodine-131 in Japan's sewage sludge.

My next post will compare some of these major events.

Below is an example of screenshots representing my has hypothesis (discussed here):

  1. my geiger counter is going nuts its a radalert 100 medtronics. went from 16 cpm at 930 pm pacific time here in seattle to 100 cpm by 945pm pst in seattle now at 500. my medtonics 100 does alpha beta gamma. medtronics now at 620cpm in seattle at 10:18 pst holding it stationary 2 feet above ground with window open checking 3 positions in room at 5 minute intervals. still climing. 16 to 640 in less than an hour

  2. I live in northeast WA state, have a Mazur PRM-9000, and it has been operating outside for the last 18 months.
The current reading is 0.14 mR/h, the previous peak before May24 was 0.21 mR/h, and I now have a new peak reading on May24 of 0.26 mR/h.
Is being inland several hundred miles making that much of a difference?
or is my equipment inadequate somehow,
or is it that different from the Medtronics unit?

  3. I meant uSv/h. and peak reading 0.26 uSv/h = 99.6 cpm
