Pedalling Death: Uranium Exports

India, Australia to begin talks on uranium exports NHK

[Excerpted] The Prime Ministers of Australia and India have agreed to start negotiations to allow export of Australian uranium to India.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard met with her Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh in New Deli on Wednesday.

They agreed to start negotiations on a bilateral civil nuclear energy cooperation arrangement.

Australia reversed its ban on uranium exports to India last year on condition it be used only for peaceful purposes.

Majia here: the article states that India hasn't signed Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.

India proposes to reduce its electricity shortages by expanding its nuclear power capacity.

Additionally, the article notes that Gillard of Australia and Singh of India also agreed to bolster "defense cooperation through joint military exercises." The Indian Ocean is the their shared target for bolstered "defense."

Looks like India is aiming to expand its nuclear umbrella.
