July 4th Updates

I don't plan on being in front of my computer today so these will be quick updates.

First, there is a complete news blackout on the Fort Calhoun Nuclear plant and Cooper nuclear plant. I cannot find any recent news. The news blackout is disconcerting. Please leave links in the comment section if you have updates.

Second, here is the best update I could find on the Los Alamos fire, which is still an unprecedentedly dangerous fire (probably due to LANL chemicals in addition to dryness), but now thankfully seems to be moving away from the lab  http://articles.boston.com/2011-07-03/news/29733708_1_premier-nuclear-weapons-laboratory-los-alamos-county-fire-lab-director

Fukushima updates are a bit more detailed, if questionable in content.

NHK is reporting that the radiation in Fukushima building #3 must be reduced by 2/3 before nitrogen injections can begin. NHK reports: "Cooling the reactors and preventing more hydrogen blasts are the top priorities in TEPCO's plan to stabilize the plant." http://www3.nhk.or.jp/daily/english/04_12.html

It appears that Tepco is concerned that another hydrogen explosion might occur. Arnie Gunderson also expressed this fear.

NHK is also reporting that problems occurred with the cooling of unit 1.

NHK: Water flow falls at No.1 reactor, but restored
http://www3.nhk.or.jp/daily/english/04_18.html
"The volume of cooling water flowing into the No.1 reactor of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant fell on Monday, forcing workers to inject additional water.

"A cooling system is in place at the number 1, 2 and 3 reactors. The system injects 3.7 tons of water every hour into the No.1 reactor.

"Tokyo Electric Power Company says the reactor's water flow began to decrease gradually around 9 PM on Sunday night. By 8:13 AM on Monday, only about 3 tons of water was flowing into the No. 1 reactor, setting off an alarm.

"Workers immediately began injecting double the usual amount of water. They managed to restore normal water flow in the reactor before 9 AM.
