Fukushima Fallout in US IS Dangerous

Jeff MacMahon at Forbes has a post exploring (albeit in a limited way) the dangers of Fukushima fallout in the U.S.

Although Jeff's post does not address the problem of internal emitters, Jeff is to be applauded as one of the very few mainstream journalists who has looked at the health effects of Fukushima fallout. Moreover, Jeff reads and responds articulately to comments posted on his sight.

Jay Gould and Benjamin Goldman provide insight into low-level ionizing radiation’s effects on human populations. Chernobyl resulted in clearly statistically significant excess mortality rates in the US and Germany.

Gould and Benjamin conclude from their very careful analysis of mortality data that the dose-response is “supralinear” rather than linear, “which means that infant mortality rises more rapidly at low doses” (p. 7)


There are a variety of explanations for the observed supralinear effect at low doses but the effect is clear.


Unfortunately, low-dose radiation, particularly under conditions of sustained exposure, is very dangerous for human and animal health.
