NHK: Survey: radioactive materials found in plankton

http://www3.nhk.or.jp/daily/english/09_02.html

"A scientific survey has found radioactive substances in plankton collected from the seafloor off Fukushima Prefecture.

A group of researchers from the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology ended its 8-day survey on Friday. The goal was to study the spread of radioactive materials into the Pacific Ocean from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The group collected samples from the seabed along a 120-kilometer stretch off the coast of Fukushima.

Radioactive cesium was found in animal plankton collected 35 kilometers off Iwaki City. The level was measured at 6 becquerels per kilogram.

OPPD reinstalls nuke plant dam

"The Omaha Public Power District is reinstalling the plastic, water-filled dam that — until bursting — had kept Missouri River floodwaters away from the buildings that house its nuclear reactor.

After the Aqua Dam ruptured on June 26, water flowed around the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station to a depth of more than 2 feet.

However, OPPD officials said, the water did not reach the reactor or other critical areas because additional barriers, including sandbags, were in place.

Mike Jones, a spokesman for the utility, said Wednesday that the Aqua Dam is expected to be in place by Saturday...

Today, OPPD said, the Missouri River level at Fort Calhoun was at 1,006 feet above sea level.

LOS ALAMOS — Fire crews continue reinforcing fire lines and implementing structure protection plans for the west side of Los Alamos.

The Las Conchas Fire has burned 130,691 acres as of Wednesday night but now is 40 percent contained.

The Forest Service says hot, dry weather Tuesday resulted in extreme fire behavior. Large plumes of smoke were visible from the communities of Santa Clara, Chicoma Mountain, Los Alamos, Pajarito Mountain Ski Area and surrounding areas.

Fire officials say the communities were not threatened as the smoke and flames remained within the fire perimeter..."
